The company integrates activities across a Research and Development Department responsible for innovating, an Engineering Department that delivers scaled iterations of bioreactors and bioprocess, and the Operations Department responsible for ensuring the company runs smoothly. What this role entails:
- Oversee and manage communications between Research & Development, Business Development, External IP and Legal Advisors, and other key functions.
- Lead the drafting, amendment, and maintenance of patent applications, ensuring timely protection of intellectual property.
- Take charge of grant writing and the administrative duties related to project management of funded programs.
- Project manage external consultancy projects, industrial-academic collaborations, and company-funded PhD initiatives.
- Support the Business Development team with technical insights during customer interactions.
- Attend and represent the company at seminars, conferences, and other industry events, including delivering presentations and pitches as required.
- Scout and recommend emerging technologies, including AI and ML, that align with strategic goals.
- Ensure compliance with all current and future regulatory requirements, collaborating with external experts as necessary.
- Continually seek ways to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of business operations.


Objectives
- Utilise technical expertise to ensure potential new IP is captured, organised, and protected promptly, maintaining a competitive edge and supporting commercial objectives.
- Stay informed on IP data, analytics, and advancements in the field to support informed business decision-making.
- Drive commercial impact by exploiting IP through licensing and other mechanisms.
- Identify new business opportunities by leveraging existing technical capabilities or proposing expansions within technical teams.
- Integrate market intelligence and customer feedback into the innovation pipeline, ensuring R&D efforts align with market needs and commercial potential.
- Develop and monitor KPIs to measure the effectiveness of innovation initiatives, ensuring they align with strategic goals and deliver tangible business value.


Selection criteria:


Experience:
- Proven track record in innovation management, IP management, or commercial exploitation within high-tech, biotech, life sciences, technology consulting, or similar product development sectors.
- Strong technical background with a degree in engineering or science; a postgraduate qualification is highly desirable.
- Extensive hands-on experience in commercially-driven science, engineering, or innovation, with a focus on bringing new technologies to market.
- Demonstrated success in creating value through technological breakthroughs.
- Practical problem-solving skills in a real-world environment.
- Expertise in IP portfolio management and patent drafting is advantageous, though training can be provided for the right candidate.
- Experience with budgeting, financial management, and project management is considered a plus.

Essential:

- Strong technical background with a degree in engineering or science.
- Proven experience in leveraging cutting-edge technologies to drive commercial success, with a solid understanding of IP management, from ideation to protection and exploitation.
- Proven ability to bridge the gap between technical innovation and business strategy, ensuring that scientific breakthroughs translate into tangible value and competitive advantage.
Preferable:
- Experience of working in a start-up/spin out/research environment.
- Post-graduate qualification in engineering or science
